Congrats to Jonathan Foster and Brett Carlsen for taking first and second place in POTW.

With temperatures lingering in the mid 20's throughout the day, Rochester got its first significant snow accumulation this winter of almost six inches. Snow removal was slow and occurred throughout the day amidst wind gusts of 30-40 miles an hour.

As mentioned at meeting and in the previous blog post, Alan Chin will be coming to speak at RIT. Come see him Jan 26 at 7pm in Gannett room 1104 (Neblette). He’ll also be at the RIT NPPA meeting on the 27th at noon in the PJ lab (room 7B-3140).

Since Friday was our first meeting after winter break, we spent most of the time discussing what everyone did over break and talking about images from break. We haven’t devoted much time to discussing Photo of the Week lately, so it was good to spend time doing just that. We discussed every submitted photograph.

In a little over a week (Jan 27), photographer Alan Chin will join us during meeting. Check out his incredible work here. We’ll post details of his visit soon.

As we look to do more fundraising, we need ideas of things to do. A couple ideas tossed around have been photographing club events for sponsoring clubs or selling stickers or t shirts. Feedback on these suggestions and more are welcome.

Congrats to Josh Barber and Prisca Edwards for tying for first place.

Last week we skyped with Ben Garvin. He talked about maximizing break time. He said if you are interested in newspapers or wires, contact those places now and go in and talk to them. He said show your work and be genuinely interested in what they do and don’t be cocky about your work and what you do because that gives a bad impression. He also told us to make sure we know how to produce compelling multimedia. In addition, he said that the best photojournalists show their subjects they genuinely care about them, and they do not just take photographs and leave.

On last Friday’s meeting, we talked about ways to find stories and things to shoot.

One place to go is Rochester’s Community Wishbook. You’ll find a ton of groups in the Rochester area and ways to get in contact with them. Especially when working with charities, it’s important to know that what you are doing is for the right reasons. Some places have felt hurt when they let students come in and work, and as soon as the students (or professionals) are finished with their stories, they leave and never give prints to or communicate with the groups again.

The PJ faculty are also good resources for story ideas. Prof Loret Steinberg, for instance, has lived in Rochester for a long time.

We had a tie for POTW this week, even after we revoted. Congrats to Jackie Connor and Jonathan Sanger!

Last Friday we had Brett Carlsen talk about making money, but more specifically what he’s done to get work opportunities while still in school. He’s done a couple freelance jobs for The New York Times, as well as frequent assignments for Rochester’s Democrat and Chronicle.

Congrats to Brett Carlsen and Jonathan Foster for taking first and second respectively in last week’s POTW.

Today we Skyped with alumna Emily Bogle who is currently working at NPR. She talked about working at NPR, life in DC, internships and much more.

Winner of POTW was Jonathan Sanger and runner up was Brett Carlsen. We had many tie breakers to get to the point.

This past Friday we talked about things to bring on assignments besides cameras. This includes a spare change of clothes, water, food, etc for full day shoots.
